Carbon management is a cyclical rather than a once-off process and any plan you put in place must be reviewed and adapted to suit changing circumstances.
Carry out an overall review of your carbon management plan at least once a year. Continuous monitoring of your plan is also essential to facilitate early identification and rectification of problems. You can then make annual comparisons of your carbon footprint. You can compare specific areas within scopes 1, 2 & 3 and see where you have improved, and where you can still improve.
Each time you use or update the calculator you can save your results data in excel format, allowing you to build up a record of your emissions and track the changes for each of the sections.
Once you have compared current and past carbon footprints, examine the following areas in the context of your carbon management plan:
What has worked and why? How could this approach be applied to other areas?
What hasn’t worked and why? How could things be done differently?
What has changed? Energy prices, work practices, budget, staff numbers etc.
What new technologies have emerged that could be utilised?
An important part of the review step is to make the results known to others e.g. senior management, staff etc. This will serve two purposes
Give praise on a job well done
Outline areas that need improvement and outline to people where you will need their help.
